Bit & Being Press

An independent publisher of literary fantasy,
thrillers, and science fiction.

We publish the novels of Wren Hallam, six of them so far, with two more on the way. They take place in a school where listening is taught as a discipline, in the tunnels beneath a frozen European border, on the only tether that can reach a black hole and hold, and in a Portland kitchen where a grieving man built something a corporation later claimed. One situation runs through all of them. Someone hears what they were not meant to hear, finds they cannot unhear it, and has to decide what that knowledge obliges them to do.

The Quiet Art

Some voices sound wrong.

He was five years old the first time he heard it — the hollow in his mother's voice, the space between a word and the truth beneath it. Cael does not yet understand lies, or grief, or the strange inheritance waking inside him. He knows only that some voices sound wrong, and that he cannot stop hearing the difference.
